Arsene Wenger is sure to come in for the usual avalanche of criticism following the West Brom match on Saturday. Doubtless most of it will be directed at the failure to address the goalkeeping situation and whilst this is a legitimate grievance, I am stunned that Gaël Clichy hasn’t come in for more stick this season.
As bad as Almunia is, Clichy’s ineptitude has been illustrated easily as often as the Spaniard’s, particularly in recent weeks. Despite this, I can’t remember reading a word written against him outside of F365. The infamous foul in the dying seconds at Birmingham, the horrorshow for Man Utd’s third at the Emirates last season and last week’s two-mistakes-in-one at Sunderland are the most memorable of his defensive shockers but his display at the weekend was a new low.
The media and the fans alike seem to think that if Arsenal spend big on a solid goalkeeper then they’ll find consistency, but with Clichy a mainstay of the side they’ll never challenge again. Too many mistakes too often.
